In 1991, a new type of specialty store was born. The Bauer family business started in a tiny shop in Redwood City, California, with only a few dozen products on the shelf. Over the years, the store grew, as did the selection of the merchandise and the involvement of more family members in the business. During the years that followed, Bauer Industries, d.b.a. Sports Rack, experienced tremendous growth as more stores were opened around California and throughout the West. This growth was fueled partly by the American infatuation with a new breed of vehicle - the SUV. In fact, the whole Sports Rack showroom was designed with the road trip enthusiast in mind. Just about all of Sports Rack's products were displayed for easy demonstration and every product could be installed right there at the store.

Through constant growth and change, Sports Rack eventually outgrew its name. Over the past 17 years we have become more than just a "Sports Rack" store. While we are still the nation's leader in sports racks and rack accessories, our current enhanced product line includes a wide array of vehicle racks, trailer hitches and hitch accessories, cargo boxes, travel gear, auto accessories and truck accessories for the entire family. We needed to change our name to reflect the growth and changes in our company. Though no name really could capture everything that we offer, Rack N Road became our new moniker to reflect the company’s new direction. Spring 2005 was the perfect time to roll out our new name… since we already had plans to give a few of the stores a facelift and update some signage anyway. Rack N Road is still the same great company with the same cool people, just with a new name and a wider variety of products.

Presently, we have nine Rack N Road stores in California, Washington, and Utah. The original 40 products grew into an inventory of 7,200 products per store. "I live in Tuscon, AZ. Last month I decided to outfit my Honda Element for road trips to San Carlos, Mexico. I researched prices on the internet and decide to order from RacknRoad.

I ordered a Yakima base rack system and it arrived in under a week. It fit fine and it was sturdy. I then ordered a Yakima Megawarrior basket system and some basket accessories. One of the accessories was no longer produced by Yakima. I was contacted by RacknRoad almost immediately. The remainder of the order arrived in a few days.
