Roof Mounted Cargo Boxes. Yakima, Thule & more

The Good: They are aerodynamic, weatherproof and lockable. These easy to install boxes now come equipped with quick release hardware. Cargo Boxes work great for carrying skis and all your extra gear. Great option for valuables that did not make the back of the car list!

The Bad: Odd shaped loads have a difficult time fitting into cargo boxes. Your new roof line clearance just changed, so watch out for low garage doors and parking garages. You might not fit. They are more expensive than a soft cargo bag but really are in a whole different class.

The Bottom Line: With gas prices going through the roof and people constantly downsizing their vehicles, cargo boxes will continue to explode in popularity. If you are not sure a box is right for you, rent one from Rack n Road and test drive it on your next road Trip.

Roof Mounted Luggage Baskets

The Good: Most of the new style baskets from BVG, Thule and Yakima allow you to not only carry all that gear, but you can also attach accessories. You can carry skis, boats, utility loads and bikes. Most attach to round, square or factory roof racks. Baskets are lower to the roof line and can clear most garage doors. There are bags that can insert inside and stretch nets that contain your gear.

The Bad: Since it is not enclosed, you can not lock your gear and unless you put everything in water resistant bags or containers, your load is not protected from the elements.

The Bottom Line: Great option for carrying just about any shaped item you want to throw into it. Relatively inexpensive.

Roof Mounted Cargo Bags

The Good: Inexpensive way to protect the gear that did not make it into the car. Creative zippers, straps and state of the art materials puts them in the upper class of your typical $29.95 cargo bag.

The Bad: Limited security, needs to attach to a factory crossbar or raised rail. Can not carry odd shaped items.

The Bottom Line: Need a little room for that annual Road Trip? A new style cargo bag might just be your answer.
